Went on a quick day trip to Dachau. Its just under three hours drive from my base and made for a good trip on a Saturday I wasn’t traveling somewhere else and didn’t want to spend much money. Other than a tank of gas and the what I think was 7 euro ticket, this was a filling day.
My first concentration camp.
The sign entering the grounds, a wall with several languages which reads: May the example of those who were exterminated here between 1933-1945 because they resisted nazism help to unite the living or the defence of peace and freedom and in respect for their fellow men.
Also, a sign in the museum portion of the grounds and I just simply couldn’t get over this man’s face. I just stood and stared at him for what seemed like forever. Chilling.
Entrance and a desk prisoners were registered at.
Legit original uniforms and another bay they showered in. The left is present day, the right is an old photo of what it was – clearly still very in tact.
Main walk way down a street like row that was between all the barracks buildings, and photo of the sleeping quarters in the barracks. Note that the barracks are rebuilt as all the original barracks were destroyed. Today, two structures stand which were fully rebuilt exactly as before so we can walk through them but they are not original.
Monuments built on the grounds. There was another protestant church one that I didn’t get a photo of. The protestant one is recognized as not having a single wall that runs parallel to any other structure on the grounds, so its got a lot of different angles and curves.
Before this first photo was a room where they were instructed to remove all clothing because they were going to take a shower. Through this solid metal door onto the brick floor they entered preparing for water to fall however they were murdered by gas. After the screaming ended, workers opened the doors and removed the dead bodies. The second photo was fire chambers that were in the next room where the dead bodies were put in to burn, one after another.
